Serbian President Labels Parliament Attack as Terrorist Act

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, a shooting outside the Serbian parliament was described by the nation's president as a "terrorist act with political motives" aimed at creating public unrest.

President Aleksandar Vucic stated that the attack was perpetrated by a former state security worker, who sought to incite fear among the public.

During a special press briefing, Vucic emphasized the seriousness of the situation, revealing that authorities had apprehended one individual in connection with the incident. He further stressed that the attack posed a significant threat to public safety.

Earlier in the day, Vucic had to cut short his participation in a state event to address the ongoing attack.

He expressed regret for leaving the occasion, stating, "I apologize for having to leave this wonderful event, but the reason is a terrorist act that took place in front of the National Assembly, and I will have to deal with it throughout the day."

This announcement occurred during a ceremony held at the Palace of Serbia.

Local reports indicate that the violent incident took place early on Wednesday at a tent encampment outside the parliament, where supporters of the ruling party had been stationed for several months.

Gunshots were heard before flames erupted, leading to one person sustaining injuries.

Initial, unverified reports suggest that the suspect fired multiple shots at another person within one of the tents, injuring the victim in the leg.

The wounded individual was promptly transported to emergency services, while police quickly detained the alleged assailant.
